Designed by Malibu legend Greg Liddle, the L-Flex fin was originally intended to be paired with the ‘modified displacement hull’ surfboards he became famous for pioneering beginning in 1968. This surfboard design is borrowed from the same hydrodynamic principles in boat hulls–it has a convex bottom contour which enables riders to trim more forward and find plane in waves with less power. And it requires a complimentary fin with a solid, finely-tuned flex. Enter the L-Flex…

Since its inception, this fin has become a widely popular option for an array of wave riding equipment; it pairs especially well with boards that are designed for acceleration, full rail carves, and smooth transitions. The L-Flex will provide down-the-line projection and positive response through turns, giving your board an energetic and alive feeling.

Here at True Ames we are indebted to the invaluable guidance that Greg has provided. It was his clear vision that was a catalyst for Chuck making fins with precision foils, in order to create the perfect amount of power and drive. Now, after more than 40 years of producing the L-Flex, it is still one of our favorite fins we carry. Throw one in your board and feel the difference that four decades of refinement can make!

Our Volan fins are fine-tuned with precision foils as well as proper flex. Crafted with a labor of love at our factory in Santa Barbara, CA, these fins undergo the strictest quality control. Our Volan panels are meticulously hand-laid and templated ensuring optimal weave orientation and superior strength, with flex coming more from the body rather than just the tip. This enhances speed and projection off the bottom and through turns, making our Volan fins a pinnacle of the highest performance flex characteristic

  • Thinner style precision foil with optimal flex
  • Volan fiberglass construction generates high-performance flex
  • The 9 and 9.5 sizes have a wide (‘W’) option, where the base is a bit longer for added stability
