Greenough Switch Hitter - Ep.3 Greenough 4A x Greenough Stage III
In Episode 3 of Switch Hitter we explore the feelings of the Greenough 4A against the Greenough Stage III in a Wayne Rich Mothership model.
The Greenough Stage III
The Stage III is a properly sized fin. It is the predecessor of the 4A, and therefore leans into the "pivot" fin arena, creating hold, stability, and more drag for noseriding. Compared to other fins of it's era, it is quite progressive and more performance oriented. It obviously has much less area than a D fin, or something like the Yater Spoon. It is a fantastic template for board that wants to noseride and needs more anchoring.
The Greenough 4A
The Greenough 4A is the most iconic single fin of the last few decades. It's original form comes from George Greenough, and was refined under the progression of the True Ames team. It is the perfect template for any and all surfboards requiring a center fin. Scaled appropriately to the size of the board, it will absolutely work in any and all conditions and board styles. Troy rides a 10" here, both to better compare to the 9.75" Stage III, but also to size against his 9'5" wide-point-back, hot doggy longboard. The 4A will allow all-around, versatile surfing. Just enough hold, just enough speed, just enough everything.
