A True Ames Day with Noa Mizuno, Alex Lopez, and Troy Mothershead

Troy drove down super duuuuuper early from Ventura to meet up with Alex and Noa at the local surf haunt and spend the day chatting about fins, surfboards, surfing, and swing some sticks.

This is an ideal day. A solid surf with the homies, some very tasty food, quality surf chats, and a casual round of golf. Hard to beat.

NSI Straps

Seriously these are the greatest straps ever. Been using them for over a decade now. They synch tight, are super easy to use, do not fail, and pack easy peasy. Every car rack using surfer needs a set of these straps.

The Surf

The waves were pretty meh, but there was a nice windswell bump and every so often a little double up left would run slightly cleaner than the rest through the mid section. Noa was riding a Burch Toe while Alex more appropriately groveled on a Terra Twin. Troy brought down the freshly minted McCallum PDX with the new McCallum Quads. Noa and Alex had been shooting for some Vissla wetsuit content and fully tricked Troy into the thinking the water was warm. Hence the overheated Mothershead in the shower after the surf. It was a warm, muggy San Diego day to boot.

Lourdes Lunch

There’s nothing quite like after surf grinds, the crew hopped over the train tracks to get some of SD’s finest Lourdes. The Caldo de Pollo is one of the greatest soups on earth and comes with a massive, buttery, perfectly cooked tortilla. Not pictured was our stop at VG’s donuts for a chocolate old fashioned.

Fin Pass Off and Golf

From there we popped up to Alex’s house to unload boards and pass along new fins and swag to mess around with. Dont forget about Leah as well. She was 8 months pregnant and totally paddled out and caught a wave! Legendary. She also has a buttery golf swing, and showed us boys how it’s done while taking a stroll around Emerald Isle. There are certainly fancier courses out there, but a dog friendly, casual executive is always going to be a good time. Alex is just getting into golf, but already has a solid handle on the basics. Noa has a mean swing and could clearly go very low when locked in. Troy has been at it for a while, nothing overly impressive, but can hang in there and keep the ball in play, for sure.
