Fast forward a few years and the Velo-spoon (short for velocity) was created. A short, red kneeboard with the deck scooped and a wide flex-tail. This board rocketed Greenough into the next dimension of wave-riding as it showcased a combination of design ideas to allow the types of maneuvers that inspired generations of surfers to this day. His kneeboards weren’t the only thing catching the attention of the surf world. The high-aspect ratio fins Greenough created to compliment his kneeboards, a direct influence of sea creatures, took the world by storm. The likes of Nat Young and Bob McTavish took notice and soon the best of the best surfers were ditching their D-fins for Greenough’s design and in 1966, was a direct influence to Nat’s winning of the world surfing championships and the ushering in of the shortboard revolution. The most popular single fin of all time, the 4-A, is the bread and butter of our catalog. It’s full base and tapering flexible tip make it one of the most versatile and performance oriented single fins ever designed. The 4-C, a precursor to the 4-A, is a truly important template as it’s the closest to the original high-aspect fin Greenough invented as you can get. The Stage 6, with its roots in windsurfing, create a highly maneuverable yet solid feel by placing more surface area deeper into the water. And finally the Power Blade, a new fin created to compliment the Greenough-style edge boards that have become popular as of recent. These fins are made with a uni-directional fiberglass cloth that allows for the fin to be made very thin, with a flex pattern that twists instead of bends. A work-in-progress fin that we are super excited to be collaborating with Greenough on and testing at our factory in Goleta! The fins we produce with Greenough were designed with performance in mind and have been a staple of our collection since the beginning. The fact that Greenough was devising these fins in the 60s goes to show how much we have to thank for his contributions to surfing.
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/4613/collections/c56977641a98e88526b85c08532e0ed5.jpg?v=1604595187

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/4613/collections/959268165303448d30291e3a0505dc5b.jpg?v=1581020244
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/4613/collections/dde6dd308f1aee383b683b17b0dc12ec_88b8afe2-9959-4380-8722-6a236883e796.jpg?v=1581024020

Each one of our volan fins are perfectly aligned for optimal weave orientation and cut from the highest quality fiberglass in order to produce fins with the very best performance flex characteristics. These limited supply fins will flex more from the body of the fin which will produce increased speed and projection off the bottom and through turns. Compared to our standard fiberglass, Volan is a heavier weight glass with a more coarse and dense weave. We painstakingly layup each 44 layer panel by hand (about 2 hours for a 30x30” panel) in order to achieve a high glass to resin ratio, and also to ensure that the coarse weave is properly saturated - these details further add to the strength, and eventually the flex pattern’s ‘memory’, which is essentially the fin’s ability to endure a large number of reps and then ‘return to center’, all while sustaining a powerful flex. All of our Volan fins are also specifically templated and aligned for optimal weave orientation (about 70* perpendicular to the base) which allow the fins to flex more through the body and ‘trunk’, as opposed to just in the thinner tip area. All in all, we've found that this labor of love results in fins that have the very best flex characteristics that we're able to make.

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0339/4613/collections/af8260b94dec70914632e6a9802912a9.jpg?v=1580998603"}}]
These fins are designed by George Greenough and are targeted at the “Edge” board project. The outline is a very slender design that will harness heaps of power while maintaining very low drag. Longer, point break style waves are the venue to realize full potential. Look for more on this design in the future as we experiment with different materials and flex patterns. Currently we are making these fins in Volan and we try to keep them relatively stiff. If there is too much flex they tend to lose power.
Our Volan fins are fine tuned with a precision foil as well as proper flex. They are handmade in our factory and go through the strictest quality control. Fins made with Volan fiberglass and properly aligned for optimal weave orientation have very high performance flex characteristics — with the flex coming more from the body of the fin rather than just at the tip.
